Mission Statement

At Centennial Middle School, we are dedicated to engage and support all students in a standards based curriculum. Our commitment to continuous improvement and achievement will empower students to be positive contributors in a global society. We provide a safe environment which continually promotes respect and inspires students to learn and act responsibly.

Welcome to Centennial Middle School!

Centennial Middle School is a setting where all members of the learning community are committed to providing excellent learning and growth for all students. Originally a middle school opening in 1976, hence the name Centennial, the building was later converted to an elementary building where it served the community with this designation until June of 2001. Re-opened in the fall of 2002, Centennial is now the second middle school, just down the road from its sister school, Millennium Middle School. Students attending Centennial Middle School are assigned to the building based on residence with the geographic attendance boundaries of the school as well as the district’s School of Choice Program.

Centennial Middle School is located in the City of South Lyon in the southwest corner of Oakland County. Oakland County is located north of Detroit, Michigan. This growing county is rich in culture, resources, quality living opportunities and the home of many major industries. Centennial is in close proximity to highly respected colleges and universities. The building is a short drive to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti and Washtenaw Community College, also located in Ypsilanti.

Our mission statement reflects the high standards and expectations we place on our students and ourselves. Students maintain high academic achievement as well as high average daily attendance. To realize these standards, the staff of over 50 teachers, two administrators, one secretary, two data processors, one hall monitor, one building engineer, two counselors, two social workers, three noon supervisors, four custodians, one restorative practice facilitator, along with parents and volunteers, are committed as a team for each student to realize success. Our PTO and CHEERS volunteers are a tremendous support to the programming at Centennial. Members of each of these organizations contributed over 4000 hours last year to assist in various activities throughout the year.

The Centennial Staff is committed to insuring that students will be prepared for their secondary education and the demands they now face. In the fall of 2002, Centennial became a member of the North Central Association. The staff will capitalize on the recently developed student profile and performance goals to develop strategies that will be employed across the building in order to promote improvement in student achievement.

The core curriculum at Centennial Middle School is the foundation for the learning that takes place on a daily basis. Students are provided rich learning experience in all areas of Language Arts (reading, writing, speaking, listening and literature), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Health, Physical Education, Music, Art, Technology and Vocal Music. All teaching staff meets North Central certification requirements.

We continue to strive for excellence at Centennial Middle School. A collaborative culture focus on creating the best possible environment for students to learn and teacher to teach has been achieved and nurtured on an ongoing basis. We have many programs, such as our Restorative Practices Model, which makes Centennial Middle School a special place to learn.

Teaching Staff The Centennial staff is comprised of over 50 dynamic teachers that are committed to the daily growth of our students. Inclusive on our staff are five Special Education teachers, a full time media specialist, two counselors, two social workers and two speech pathologists.

Extra-Curricular Centennial student athletes have a wide variety of choices in terms of competitive sports. Centennial Middle School is part of the Lakes Valley Conference. Other activities in band and student clubs are also available to Centennial students.
