Young children learn most effectively when they are engaged in an environment where teacher-child, child-child, and child-material interactions are all at high levels. Learning is seen as an active process where knowledge is constructed as well as acquired. Young children should be doing what best serves their development in the long term.
As part of the Michigan Quality Rating System we have chosen to use the HighScope approach for our curriculum and the Child Observation Record (COR) as our assessment.

Child Observation Record (COR) Assessment Tool
These are researched and validated systems in wide use throughout the country. The curriculum and instructional strategies are based on developmentally appropriate practice for young children. These strategies provide a balance of child-initiated and teacher-initiated activities, which enhances the social, emotional, physical and intellectual development of each child. The curriculum is based upon emerging abilities in young children and is responsive to the differences in their levels of development.
The staff believes in a warm, nurturing environment that provides children physical and psychological safety. Teachers and parents working as a team provide the learning experiences and models, fostering positive attitudes and dispositions toward learning.
From the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Position Statement:
A curriculum that draws on research assists teachers in identifying important concepts and skills as well as effective methods for fostering children’s learning and development. When informed by teachers’ knowledge of individual children, a well-articulated curriculum guides teachers so they can provide children with experiences that foster growth across a broad range of developmental and content areas. Three, Four, and Five Year Olds
Preschool classes provide "hands-on" experiences such as:
- Art exploration
- Music and movement
- Science and nature study
- Oral language development
- Alphabetic principles
- Counting and number recognition
- Large and small muscle development
- Shared reading and writing
Children are encouraged to develop positive social habits such as:
- Good manners
- Self Control
- Recognizing the rights of others
- Learning to adapt to group situations
- Making new friends
The HighScope curriculum has been developed to provide developmentally appropriate Kindergarten readiness skills for children. The preschool teachers collaborative with the South Lyon School District and Kindergarten teachers to keep our program in line with district requirements.
Preschool classes are taught by certified teachers with an assistant. Parents are welcome to work in the classroom.
Classes are limited to 18 children in 4-year old classes and 16 in the 3-year old class.
In Parent-Tot classes, for children 2 to 3 1/2, parents and children learn to explore the beauty of art, the joy of story telling, positive socialization and healthy physical activities all led by an experienced teacher. Classes are limited to 12 children.
We encourage parents registered in our program to complete the Brooks Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) to check their child’s development. Professionals rely on ASQ for the best developmental and social-emotional screening for children from one month to 5 ½ years. Highly reliable and valid, ASQ looks at strengths and trouble spots and incorporates parents’ expert knowledge about their children.
After completing the ASQ the results will be provided to the preschool program. Your child's classroom teacher will be able to meet provide you with scores from the questionnaire. Scores beneath the cutoff points indicate a need for further assessment; scores near the cutoff points call for discussion and monitoring; and scores above the cutoff suggest the child is on track developmentally.
