EXCITING EARLY CHILDHOOD NEWS - PreK for All!

Governor Whitmer has launched an initiative to provide Free Universal Preschool for all four-year-olds by the year 2027.  This program, which is called PreK for All, is considered an expansion of the Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP). GSRP is fully funded by the state of Michigan and currently available to families who meet qualifying factors, specifically certain income requirements.  Moving forward, the state plans to remove the income cap as a qualifying factor which will then result in preschool being offered free of charge for all students who will be four years old by the required cutoff date.

In anticipation of the expansion of free preschool, we have aligned some of our classes with the GSRP schedule so that we can change our tuition classes to GSRP, which would mean that there would not be a charge for the class.

Although the initial time frame was for PreK for All to begin in 2027, the state released an implementation brief that indicates the possibility of funding being available as early as the 2024-25 school year.  As a district, we are committed to setting up a structure, so we are prepared to move forward with starting our transition to free four-year-old preschool program to as many families as possible.

We do not have any guarantees that there will be an expansion of GSRP, but we have aligned a few of our classrooms to meet the requirements of GSRP if the opportunity of free preschool becomes available for our families.  It has been extremely challenging creating our 2024-2025 preschool schedule because of the uncertainty of GSRP expansion.  Our goal is to provide free preschool for as many of our families as possible, but still maintain different options of schedules in the event GSRP expansion does not take place.

If the State of Michigan expands GSRP, our classes that align with the GSRP schedule will be free.  If the State does not expand GSRP, we will charge tuition for these classes.  On our schedule, we have put an asterisk next to the classes that may become GSRP.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call (248) 573-8330 or email lloydm@slcs.us

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate this transition to PreK for All!

South Lyon Preschool supports an effective early childhood program that recognizes each child as a whole person, whose growth occurs in developmental stages that are uniquely individual and continuous.

Young children learn most effectively when they are engaged in an environment where teacher-child, child-child, and child-environment interactions are all at high levels.  Learning is seen as an active process where knowledge is constructed as well as acquired.

The curriculum and instructional strategies are based on developmentally appropriate practice for young children.  These strategies provide a balance of child-initiated and teacher-initiated activities, which enhances the social, emotional, physical and intellectual development of each child.  The curriculum is based upon emerging abilities in young children and is responsive to the differences in their levels of development.  The curriculum is aligned with the Early Childhood Standards of Quality for Prekindergarten set by the Michigan State Board of Education.

The staff believes in a warm, nurturing environment that provides children physical and psychological safety.  Teachers and parents working as a team provide the learning experiences and models, fostering positive attitudes and dispositions toward learning.
