  POINTS OF PRIDE
  • Members of the staff continued providing staff development for their colleagues both through formal presentations and within the classroom. Salem teachers also invited other teachers in the district into their classrooms to see the new skills being taught by CITA staff being successfully implemented within their classrooms in order to develop a fuller understanding of the concepts being presented.
  • Two Book Fairs are held each year in support of reading at home and Reading Month activities.
  • The Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) at Salem Elementary continues to be very involved in providing support, both human and financial.
  • Fourth grade students are involved in yearly water testing of the Johnson Creek.
  • PTO provided popcorn for sale on Fridays and used the proceeds to pay for assemblies to enrich the curriculum.
  • Teachers included guest speakers in their classroom instruction in order to create a real-life connection to instruction for the students.
  • Each grade level presented an evening concert for their families and friends.
  • Fifth grade students attended a week of camp at the Outdoor Education Center in the Battle Creek School District.
  • Salem Elementary School has been recognized as a "Michigan Green School".
  • The Salem Student Council was elected on Election Day in November and met monthly to plan activities for the student body. The design of the election process was refined to more closely resemble the real-life process so that students could better understand their responsibilities as voters when they reach the age of 18.
  • Parents continue to add small touches to the décor of the building that make it feel even more like a community school.
