   Points of Pride
  • ·Our students scored above State averages in all curricular areas on the MEAP tests given to third, fourth, and fifth graders.
  • Kent Lake received an all A report from the Education Yes Report Card
  • Our first graders participated in an Earth Day poster contest. The following students were winners of the contest:
    • Memphis MacGregor
    • Sophia Joseph
    • Hannah Holycross
    • Hayden Holt
       
  • As a part of our Character Education Program, our Tenth Annual Pride Week was held in October. This year the week celebrated “Red Ribbon Spirit Week” as our students committed to stay drug free and participated in activities to promote the pride they feel in being a member of the Kent Lake community.
  • The students celebrated March is Reading Month through a variety of enrichment activities that related to the “Just Read” theme. A schoolwide competition was held amongst classrooms. The winning classrooms that earned the most points by reading, attending various reading activities, and participating in the Friday Spirit Days are:
    • Mrs. Breier’s Class
    • Mrs. Madeja’s Class
  • The Michigan Cafe took place in May and was an outstanding presentation by Kent Lake’s third grade students.
  • Numerous Kent Lake students had their artwork displayed at the Salem-South Lyon Public Library during the district art show.
  • Melissa Cherry represented Kent Lake teachers as our Oakland County Outstanding Teachers.
  • Kent Lake’s Staff aligned field trips with curriculum. They included Washburn School, the Canton Health Exploration Center, The Rouge River plant, The Capitol, and the Jiffy Manufacturing Company.
  • The probationary teacher mentoring program is a positive for all non-tenure teachers.
  • Throughout the year, students turned in Box Tops to purchase various items, such as playground balls. Mr. Morris’ class turned in the most Box Tops this year!
  • Many classrooms participate in classroom buddy reading programs.
  • Many classroom visitors presented in our classrooms to provide a “real-world” connection to the various curriculum areas. These include community members such as a beekeeper.
  • Ongoing Student Council activities throughout the school year include recycling, “Kiss for a Can”, school store, etc.
  • Our “Kids Caring for Kids and Others” program enabled students and their families to make contributions to Pennies for Patients, Lyon’s Community Chest and Active Faith. The Pennies for Patients Contest classroom winners are:
  • Mrs. Trzaskos’ Class
  • Mrs. Day’s Class
  • Mrs. O’Neil’s Class
  • Fifth grade students and their teachers attended a weeklong outdoor education experience at the Battle Creek Outdoor Education Center run by Battle Creek Public Schools. Cooperative problem solving, natural sciences and history were the focus of this “school away from school.”
  • Safety Patrol members helped monitor hallways and bus lines before and after school and during lunchtime.
  • Fifth grade students made morning announcements.
  • Students were recognized for the efforts they have put forth during the school year at an Honors Assembly. All students were able to stand and be recognized for their efforts in one of the many different groups identified.
  • Dawn Sprinkles, Principal’s Secretary, was recognized as Kent Lake's Betty Campion Award winner.
  • The PTO Spelling Bee was well attended by third, fourth, and fifth graders. The following winners represented their grade level in the District PTO spelling Bee:
  • 3rd grade: Connor McCollum and Jack Nevitt
  • 4th grade: Breanna Koski and Nina Ravindran
  • 5th grade: Haley Elandt and Joey Younkin
  • The Habits of Mind Field Day was a fun way for the entire school community to utilize the sixteen Habits of Mind.
  • The first graders demonstrated excellent growth in reading!
    • The kindergartners enjoyed a week long culmination of word work activities prior to their graduation day (HollyWord Week). Many parents, siblings, and friends attended the Graduation ceremony.
