K-12 Curriculum

The State of Michigan Curriculum Framework standards and benchmarks serve as the basis for South Lyon Community Schools' curriculum. To guide continuous improvement, South Lyon uses a 6-7-year plan, as budget allows, that encompasses all K-12 subject areas. This plan provides:

  • An on-going process for upgrading the curriculum,
  • Identifying and providing the necessary staff development
  • Integrating aligned technology, and
  • Developing and implementing district-wide assessments.

This plan builds on the earlier work done in each of the core areas (Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies) and incorporates the state's revised standards and benchmarks.

Subject Area Committees (SAC) are comprised of teachers, administrators, and consultants from Oakland Schools when needed.  The sequencing of each SAC is determined by considering the current status of the subject area, the last time it was revised, the extent of work to be done and the availability of district resources. The actual progression of each subject area will vary.

It is important that technology resources are also aligned with the revised standards and benchmarks. The teachers who are members of the Subject Area Committees are most knowledgeable about the standards and alignment and therefore are the best equipped to help select the software and other  technology resources to support and enhance instruction and the curriculum.  These resources can take many forms.  Available technology and how it can be used to support and extend teaching and learning may be incorporated into curriculum guides and instructional maps.

The district has developed K-H.S. technology benchmarks, aligned with the State's standards and benchmarks, to assist teachers with using technology as an instructional tool. These benchmarks, along with the Curriculum Guides below, outline the curriculum grade level expectations for students.
