Testing Out
Public Act 335, Section 21B, of the state code, requires that any high school student be offered the opportunity to “test out” of any course offered by his/her high school. Students in need of summer school information and credit recovery, should sign up to meet with their counselor. A total of 23 Credits are required for graduation.

Listed are the recommended credit checkpoints to ensure that you will graduate on time:

  • By the end of the 9th grade year students should have earned at least 5.5 credits
  • By the end of the 10th grade year, students should have earned at least 11.0 credits
  • By the end of the 11th grade year, students should have earned at least 17 credits.
  • By the end of the 12th grade year, students must have earned 23 credits.

Counseling
The Counseling Office at South Lyon High School is staffed with three guidance counselors, who work with students individually, or in groups, on matters relating to college, career planning, student scheduling, and personal social adjustment. Students and parents are encouraged to consult with counselors so that plans can be formulated which take into account the students' interests, abilities and achievements. Counselors work closely with administrators, teachers, parents, and students to ensure that the South Lyon High School experience will be a positive one for all involved.

Credits & Calendar
South Lyon High School is structured on a traditional 6-period day within two semesters per 175-day school year. Students earn ½ credit per course per semester with 24 credits possible over four years.
Graduation Requirements
  • Classes of 2010 & Beyond: 23 credits
  • and the state-mandated graduation requirements.

All students are required to take the Michigan Merit Examination (ACT, Work Keys & content area tests).
