ACADEMIC STANDARDS:

  • We are proud to be a part of South Lyon Community Schools, where the focus remains on increasing student achievement.
  • Dolsen Elementary is a NCA/CASI (North Central Association/Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement) accredited school. We adhere to common standards for excellence and continuous school improvement. On our recent Quality Assurance Review (Spring 2011) we attained “Highly Functional” (the highest rating) on “Governance and Leadership” and “Documenting and Using Results”.
  • Teachers at Dolsen teach to curriculum benchmarks provided by South Lyon Community Schools Curriculum, Instruction, Technology, and Assessment (CITA) Department. Our curriculum is fully aligned with the content standards and benchmarks outlined in the State of Michigan Curriculum Framework.

  • Our students score above State averages in all curricular areas on the MEAP tests given to third, fourth and fifth graders each fall.
  • Our students at the middle school performed well above state averages on the MEAP.
  • Dolsen students have multiple opportunities to use technology to enhance learning. 4 Internet computers are available in each classroom. We have ELMO document cameras and projectors in each room. We house a mini-computer lab in our library for extended class projects. We also recently added interactive SMART Boards to each K-5 classroom. Students use these as an instructional tool to enhance learning.
  • STAFF:

  • Our staff is comprised of a blend of new and experienced staff members who frequently collaborate with each other in order to foster student success.
  • Dolsen teachers work hard to meet the needs of all learners through use of the workshop model and differentiated instruction for all students.
  • Our teaching strategies have been identified as “best practices” by researchers in the field of education.
  • We use a variety of assessment (common, teacher generated, formative, summative) to improve instruction.
  • Each year our teachers attend a minimum of 30 hours of professional development and meet weekly regarding school improvement and staff development.
  • STUDENT LEADERSHIP:

  • Safety patrol members raise the flag, ring our bell, fill bird feeders for each classroom, walk kindergarten students to the bus, and do many other helpful jobs as part of our student leadership club.
  • Fourth and fifth grade students run a TV studio with daily announcements that include Habits of Mind, upcoming events, weather, birthdays, student work features, and guest teacher recognition.
  • Each year our students hold an election for Student Council. The board and classroom representatives meet monthly to provide new ideas for improving our school.
  • COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT:

  • The SIP (Shared Involvement Process) Committee is a leadership and decision making forum comprised of parents, teachers, the building administrator and support staff. We meet monthly to discuss importance decisions regarding our school.
  • CHEERS (Citizens Helping Educators Encourage Responsible Students) volunteers help support Dolsen Elementary in many ways. Volunteers spend numerous hours helping in the classroom and throughout the building.
  • Our PTO is responsible for coordinating many of our special events at Dolsen. Some PTO events include the Walk-A-Thon, Learning Gizmos Math Night, Family Movie Night, the Scholastic Book Fair, and the Dolsen Family Picnic. The PTO also sponsors student assemblies and author visits.
  • Volunteers participate in the district wide Adopt A Reader program. This program is made up of volunteers who have been trained to work with students by reading, writing and playing literacy games on a weekly basis.
  • Veterans of our community are honored at our annual Veterans’ Day assembly in November.
  • Bus drivers are given a breakfast and honored with signs and clapping at the start and end of our school bus driver appreciation day in March.
  • Moms and their children attend Muffins for Moms, and Dads and their children attend Doughnuts for Dads; two well-attended before school family events.
  • Dentist R Us comes to our school and gives low cost or free dental service to deserving families. The students receive teeth cleaning, x-rays and fluoride treatments conveniently at our school.
